If you use Windows 11 and are in the Insider program, you are likely to have noticed small but relevant changes in file browser behavior: Microsoft is deploying settings intended to make it open faster and work more fluently, as well as correcting several visual failures and improving the management of the explorer process.
The performance improvement seems to be accompanied by a pre-load technique. that Microsoft tested months ago: the system starts part of File Explorer in the background so that, when the user calls it, the window appears earlier. In previous tests that pre-load was optional and could be disabled from the folder options, in the View tab, unmarking the pre-load related box for faster launches. If you prefer not to have additional processes in memory, that is still the way back.

These optimisations remind Microsoft of previous initiatives such as Startup Boost for Office applications, which also launched processes in system boot to reduce loading times. The idea is the same: to spend some resources in the background to gain immediacy when the user interacts with the application.
In addition to performance, Microsoft has reported that it is working to make it close browser windows really stop the explorer process more reliably, which helps to avoid memory-consuming orphan processes. At the same time, corrections have been made to an annoying problem that many Insiders saw in dark mode: intense white flashes when opening File Explorer or moving between certain views, which broke the visual experience on dark interfaces.
This blink was identified by Microsoft as a known problem linked to an optional update (referred to in some reports with the KB5070311 identifier) and was detected in specific scenarios: opening a new tab, alternating the Details panel, browsing to or from Home or Gallery, starting directly in Home or even choosing "More Details" during a copy operation. Microsoft has been deploying phase corrections - some have already removed the flash when it opens the Explorer when it is configured to open in "This PC" on the Beta channel - but the stabilization work has continued for months as the company validates the solution with Insiders. For more context and follow-up to this problem, you can see the public follow-up that makes specialized media such as BleepingComputer: BleepingComputer - Microsoft still working to fix Windows Explorer white flashes.
These new developments are being delivered to the Release Preview Insiders running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 and who have installed the Builds 26100.8313 and 26200.8313(marked with the KB5083631 package). Microsoft posted the details of this deployment on the official blog of the Insider program, which explains the corrections and scenarios in which they have been applied: Windows Insider Program - Release notes (17 April 2026).
And not everything is productivity: Microsoft has also started making available to some users a new Xbox mode for PC with Windows 11. This is a complete screen interface designed to play without distractions, which minimizes system elements and prioritizes the experience with control or keyboard / mouse. According to the Insiders team, you can enter Xbox mode from the Xbox application, from the Game Bar settings or through the Win + F11 fast key; the intention is to offer a "lean-back" experience when you are looking to sit and play, without overlapping windows or intrusive notifications.

If you are a member of the Release Preview channel and want to check if you already have these improvements, check the Settings > System > About or in Windows Update the compilation number, and in the File Explorer explore the folder Options if you want to enable or disable the pre-load. If you are not part of the Insider program, these corrections and news usually come later to stable versions via cumulative updates, so it is wise to wait for Microsoft to complete the validations before updating on work teams.
In short: Microsoft continues to tune File Explorer with agility improvements and aesthetic corrections, is polishing process management to avoid inconsistencies and, at the same time, experiment with game-focused modes to reduce distractions. If you want to follow the evolution and known problems of each version, the Microsoft health information center of Windows versions is a good official reference: Windows - Release Health.
If you're testing these buildings, share your impressions: opening up faster is very good, but visual stability and that the processes are closed properly are aspects that affect daily use. And if you still notice flashes or strange behaviors, reporting it from the comment center helps the corrections get to everyone first.
